J-1 visa - is the visa, which is granted to the participants of the program Work and Travel. The full name of this visa is - J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa. This visa has a very important particularity - this is an arrival visa. In other words, this visa gives you the right only to arrive in the USA, but the period of staying is determined by the form DS-2019.
J-1 visa expires in 4 months and can not be prolonged in any case.
When you get this J-1 visa in your passport, 2 important dates are pointed there: the date of getting and expiring of the visa. For example, the date of getting the J-1 visa - the 10th of March, and the date of expiring - the 12th of September. It means, that you can stay on the territory of the United States from the 10th of March till the 12th of September and not longer.
It is very important not to exceed the terms of you staying there, which are determined by the form DS-2019. When you pay for the programme, you pay for the form DS-2019, but not the J-1 visa. J-1 visa is paid when you personally go to the Embassy.
